Yunnan Province (云南)
I’ve taken two trips to Yunnan Province — so far! This is one of the richest provinces for those interested in outdoor adventures or China’s minority cultures. My first trip, in October 2008, remains one of the best trips I’ve been on in China. The highlight was four days at the Wenhai Ecolodge outside of Lijiang. There are many other opportunities for trekking in Yunnan, but if you’re looking for a place that’s ever-so-slightly off-the-beaten-track, head to Wenhai. On my second trip, in April 2010, I hiked Tiger Leaping Gorge and visited Shangri-la.
