Fujian Province
The coastal province of Fujian has always been one of the most outward-looking regions of China. Today, for instance, the province supplies a huge proportion of the Chinese immigrants the United States. The coastal city of Xiamen reflects this history, with its European villas and commercial prosperity. But in the interior of the province, members of the Hakka ethnic minority still live in their traditional communal dwellings, called tulou. The giant earthen dwellings are now open to visitors — you can even spend the night.
