Surprising Greenery in Beijing

by Jessica Marsden on June 28, 2010

Can you guess where this photo was taken? I’ll give you a hint — it’s somewhere in Beijing.

Greenery alongside the Second RIng Road

If you guessed Beihai Park, the Fragrant Hills or another of Beijing’s famous outdoor spaces — well, but you’re wrong. This lovely little walking path runs right alongside the Second Ring Road, the major thoroughfare encircling central Beijing. Last Thursday evening, it was an oasis of calm, filled with Beijingers out walking their dogs, playing ping-pong, and simply enjoying the warm summer evening. Thanks to the trees, we could barely make out the many lanes of traffic just a few yards away.

We followed the path for about a mile in between the Gulou and Andingmen subway stops, but Google Maps shows that it continues, patchily, for a total length of about two miles along the northern part of the ring. Parts of the path were still under construction. If there are more of these walking paths in Beijing’s future, I’ll be even more excited to come back in the fall.

It’s so great when you discover little hidden gems in big, bustling cities that you can escape to.
