Fenghuang’s old town wall glows a warm pink when it is bathed in the evening sun. All day long, tourists meander its length, admiring the small carvings that adorn the roofs above. I find its structure a little confusing — were the houses on the other side of the wall once not a part of the town? Chinese tourist sites tend to be a little low on explanatory material, so this question was never answered. Nonetheless, the pink sandstone and old-fashioned architecture combine to make a lovely experience.
This is the latest in a series of Friday snapshots featuring photos from my travels in China and beyond.

China is so damn charming! This shot reminds me very much of Pingyao (small town, big wall). It’s only when I looked back at my own shots of China, that I realised how many days were plagued with blank skies such as seen here. I hasten to add, that is not a blight on your photography! I realised how hard it is. Great shot, great country.
The blank skies do take some of the magic out of travel photos – and sometimes travel experiences, too. I’m never sure whether to blame the pollution or the climate.
Thank you Jessica!
For no real reason I opted for Hunan for my proposed trip to China. I was excited before, but now I’m really excited after finding your blog. Dehang is what I’m looking for most but equally seeing modern China too. And I now will have no excuse to struggle on finding the right place to eat!
Thanks for filling gaps that the Rough Guide and all the others could never fill.
