The past weekend was a good illustration of the joys in revisiting even the most on-the-beaten-track place in Beijing. On this trip, I was accompanying my friend Lily (who doesn’t have a blog but suggests you might want to buy a necktie) on her first trip to China. It was fun to watch her first reactions to the palace and the city, and to try to remember how I felt on my first visit to Beijing in 2007. In the Forbidden City, it’s hard not to be impressed by the hundreds of beautiful, intricately decorated palaces. In her words, “All the touristy stuff is touristy for a reason.” But you are not entirely transported into the past. As you can see in this picture, the holiday-weekend crowds were definitely out in full force, reminding us just how large and overwhelming China can be.
