Slideshow: Humayun’s Tomb

by Jessica Marsden on September 18, 2009

Yes, that Taj Mahal is insanely beautiful. You’re not too cool to go there, and you definitely should. But before you leave Delhi for Agra, be sure to visit Humayun’s Tomb as a sort of prequel to the Taj itself. The building of Humayun’s Tomb preceded the Taj by 50+ years and initiated a new era in Mughul architecture. The shape of the tomb’s main building evokes that of its more famous younger cousin, and the building materials (primarily red sandstone) are the same ones used in the Taj’s outlying buildings. And unlike at the Taj, you’ll have time to savor the details, since you won’t be hurried through by the hordes behind you.

I’ve been to the Taj, but missed this one. Wish I had known about it back then. Great pictures!

You got some amazing shots. I love places like this where you don’t have to fight the crowds and can really take time to enjoy the visit.

Beautiful photos. I love the colors…the muted red and blue in the one picture is stunning…

I have never heard of this tomb. If I ever have the pleasure of visiting India I will certainly put it on my to do list.
