Hong Kong Bird and Flower Markets

by Jessica Marsden on June 12, 2009

When you’re tired of Hong Kong’s skyscrapers and expensive bars, head to Mong Kok in Kowloon. There’s still plenty of hustle and bustle, but instead of suits rushing to and from the office in Central, look for old Hong Kong ladies doing their daily shopping. This is a good place to sample Hong Kong delicacies, from egg tarts to roast pork buns. It’s also where you can see Hong Kong’s bird and flower vendors at work. The specialty markets each cover several blocks, and you can buy anything bird- or flower-related that you can imagine. In the bird market, look out for mesh bags humming with living flies — bird food.

To get to the markets, take the MTR to Prince Edward station. Signs in the station will point you to the markets. On your way back downtown, follow Nathan Rd south to the Mong Kok station.

This is the second in a series of weekly slideshows spotlighting places I’ve been on my travels, in China and beyond. You can also view this album, along with more photos, at To China and Beyond’s Picasa page.
