The blog I Will Teach You To Be Rich posted a terrific guide to inexpensive, full-time travel last week. Some of Nora Dunn’s tips were best suited for those planning to be on the road for a long time: work while traveling, get free accommodation, etc. But a few can just as well be applied to the one- or two-week trip:
1. Save 80% on Airfare: She highlights the website Which Budget, a sort of Expedia for budget airlines only. (Did you know budget airlines aren’t usually considered in online searches? I didn’t.)
7. Avoid souvenirs: Easier said than done, right? I love, love, love to have souvenirs from my trips. But I know I could be more conscious about my choices. Over the past year-of-perpetual-traveling, some souvenirs have become staples in my life — wool scarf/shawl from Kunming, silver earrings from Changsha, bedding from India. But there are others collecting dust. That money could have funded more traveling, or more foreign beer from Metro, a luxury I am currently forgoing in order to have more money for… traveling.
8. Be smart about food: Yes! This is so important, and yet so difficult to do when you are with a large group. To save money on food, you have to be aware — do you really want an appetizer? another drink? Just because that’s what everyone else is doing doesn’t mean you have to do the same. Dunn rehashes some of the classic low-food-costs advice: stay away from hotel breakfasts and tourist restaurants-with-view, and splurge at lunch rather than dinner.
