Dehang Photos

by Jessica Marsden on May 31, 2009

I just got back from two days in Dehang, a small village nestled in the mountains of western Hunan Province. Historically, it was an agricultural community belonging to the Miao minority group, also known as the Hmong. Now, the center of the village has been spiffed up for tourists, with plenty of shops, restaurants and inns. However, the level of development is nothing like that of Lijiang, where the tourism development has all but drowned out local culture. Once you step away from Dehang’s village center, the hustle and bustle disappears and you are free to meander through terraced fields and majestic karsts.

A full post and travel guide will be ready shortly, but for now, enjoy these photographs:

This area is exactly what we are hoping to see without the heavy traffic of Guilin. Thank you for your gorgeous photographs which have enticed us to instead travel to Dehang which is closer to our path as well!!!

I also spent a few days in DeHang a few weeks ago ( early August/09) and it was probably my favourite place on our month long journey around 4 Provinces. It was interesting to see your photos, taken at some of the same places we captured, but looking so different because of the time of year.
The people were lovely; warm hearted and welcoming and the village lacked crowds of tourists found in so many other places. Hopefully it remains unspoiled.
